The Sun

As we bask in a gloriously gloomy, wet and cold midwinter let us turn our minds towards the summer when we will be able to "frolic" in the sun once again.

What's that you say?

The sun is dangerous, Nanny tells us we will die of cancer if we expose ourselves to it?

We must besport ourselves as though we were in the Court of Versailles, and ensure that our skin is as white as white can be?

Ermmmm...not so fast.

Can you guess what has happened children?

Yes, that's right, as with other scientific bollox that Nanny pumps into her propaganda it seems that the advice that the sun is bad for you is in fact bollox.

Seven organisations (including Cancer Research UK and the National Osteoporosis Society) now believe (note that science under Nanny has been debased to a belief system, on a par with religious faith) that short spells in the sun (without suncream and in the middle of the day) are good for us.

It seems that the "experts" have now realised (something that has been known for decades by every O Level biology student) that the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D (the vitamin that protects us from rickets).

It seems that people have become so indoctrinated by Nanny against going out in the sun, that the lack of sunlight is in fact causing a deficiency in vitamin C in some sections of the community.

As with all advice from Nanny, ignore it, use your commonsense and indulge in a little of what you fancy.

  1. Every thing in moderation and you won't go far wrong.

  2. Surely Tonk, it should be "Everything in moderation, including moderation.", of course from Oscar Wilde.

There is something gloriously replenishing for the soul in say, eating a whole pack of chocolate hob-nobs in one go, for instance. Wouldn't dare do it daily mind! :)

    "some sections of the community"
What they actually mean is people who wear bags over their heads, but they daren't say so.

Wait until someone figures out there might have been some hidden health benefits, beside the known risks, in taking in the evil weed in moderation - appetite suppression, less diabetes and obesity - source of nitric acid and vitamin B - build-up of the immune system against toxins, viral suppression - increased brain activity, less old-age senility - speculations to be sure, the actual hard-core science on the subject corrupted long ago by soft-science statistical modeling, but indeed smoking will become compulsory and tobacco will become dispensed for free by NHS at the doctor's office. It's just a funny thought, hearing you say it that way, a laugh.

Come to sunny Australia and face the almost inevitable fact of having basal and squamous cell carcinomas dug out of your face.
    Make them laugh at that.

We're not discussing Australia, rather the cold, gloomy UK where every little glimpse of the sun is something to be savoured. Are you aware of the fact that the UK is around 55 deg N where even should we have unbroken sunshine it's nowhere near the strength of Australian sun? Furthermore there is less damage to the ozone layer over the northern hemisphere and what hole does form in the ozone layer doesn't extend down to our latitude. Finally, the small numbers of skin cancers that do occur in the UK are almost all down to overseas travel to sunnier climes, and sunbeds. There you are - some hard science.

Forgot to mention. Turns out that incidences of skin cancer in the UK could also be attributed to sunscreen creams. The UV absorptive dyes are themselves carcinogenic, and fresh research has found that when these dyes absorb UV they can cause the release of free radicals in the skin. Free radicals are known to damage DNA which is the cause of cancers. We already have built in sun protection, it's called a suntan. I simply start to sunbathe in March so my tan develops very slowly without burning. Come summer and I'm protected against what little sunshine we see. Another point is that in the UK the UV index cannot exceed 8 on a scale of 1-16. Even then that's only in late June at the solstice. Usual UV levels in the UK are 6-7 which is "moderate". No, the "sun causes cancer" nonsense is promoted by the media-driven Fear Industry, certain of the medical profession out to make a name for themselves, and of course Big Pharma wants to sell loads of expensive but cheaply made and itself carcinogenic chemical slop. If Government found a way to tax sunbathing the cancer warnings would vanish overnight. While we all know that Vitamin D is made under the skin when exposed to sunlight what isn't generally known is that the precursor is "bad" cholesterol, and there is an established connection between heart health and sunbathing. Perhaps our friend from Australia might reflect on the fact that the major cause of death in the UK isn't skin cancer, but heart disease.

Disgusted Tunbridge Wells: How refreshing to hear some commensense on this subject instead of the usual paranoia! When people of our age were youngsters most of our summers were spent out in the sun virtually all day, every day, and far from killing us, or making us ill, we were all the better for it, far healthier than today's generation of couch potatoes spending all their free time glued to televisions, computers etc!

  9. A quote from the magazine 'Healthspan':
"More than 20 studies have shown that the incidence of vitamin D deficiency is increasing" and "Have you ever wondered why we get more colds in winter, when we are exposed to less sunlight"?

Dr Hilary Jones, every woman's bedside manner, said that an hour of sun on the body, without blocking it, was good for you.

I spend 6 minutes in a solarium every 10 days.
