Vetting Changes

I see that Nanny's ludicrous plans for vetting all adults who have any form of contact with children are to be downsized.

Nanny's Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) will no longer go ahead in its original format, and the vetting of individuals will be significantly curtailed. The original plans would have entailed approximately 9 million people having to be vetted (oh, and they would have had to pay Nanny for the privilege!).

The onus will now shift to the employer to ensure staff are properly checked and cleared to work.

So far so good, except that the number of people affected is expected to more than halve. This still means around 4 million will have to be vetted!

Additionally, given how many organisations adopt brain dead jobsworth procedures, the level of checks carried out by employers may well still be absurdly OTT.

Therefore I suggest that before people break out the champagne and salute the "new" freedoms being proposed by the coalition, we "suck it and see" (as it were) and wait to see exactly what happens in reality.

  2. This whole scheme, in both its original form and the new form, is about Nanny's two real loves;

    1) A nice little earner; kerching.

    2) More personal data for the databases.

    Although we got rid of Nu Labour's stasi, we now appear to have Blu Labour's stasi; the population cannot win....Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.

    The phrase 'too little, too late' comes to mind, or am I just an old cynic? In any event, no way should the person being vetted have had to pick up the bill. I suppose any improvement has to be step in the right direction, but like your good self, Ken, I shall defer judgement until I see what actually happens! As you observe, "There is a world of difference between a politician's promise and legislative reality!" And we know they never break promises, don't we!

  4. What will be significant would be if a person doing more than one job (or role)doesn't have to get more than one clearance to cover them all. Anything else and it will be confirmed as a continuing revenue raising scam.

  5. Local Authorities and others within the State sector will be dancing with joy, anyone with the slightest contact with 'vulnerable groups' will now be expected to succumb to this new regime and not only their employees; they will undoubtedly extend it to all who they license from pub landlords, taxi drivers and hot-dog van men (and women) to Punch and Judy Artistes at the seaside and volunteers enabling children to make use of council football pitches, the list will go on and on.
