Bollocks

BS
Monday morning crashed into my life in a particularly jarring way today.

I made the mistake of watching 5 minutes of BBC Breakfast, at a time when two people (I know not who they were) were being interviewed about the causes of the riots.

In a nutshell here are the "causes" (according to them):

1 Children want to be respected, but feel they are not "respected"

2 Children should be heard

3 During the school holidays there is nothing for "children" to do

4 "Children" perceive adult authority as "oppressive"

Well then!

The above is utter bollocks to my humble view:

1 Respect is earned, it is not an automatic birthright

2 This is an adult world, "children" should not be heard at all and should have no say in how it is run.

3 It seems to me there is an awful lot that "children" can do during the holidays, yet many of them prefer to sit inside fiddling with their pcs or watching MTV.

4 Were adult authority that "oppressive" the little brats would not have been able to riot in the first place.

5 The age range of the rioters was between 10-25+ hardly an exclusively "childrens'" riot!

As said, watching this proved not to be a great start to Monday!

    Just heard (yet another) talking head on Radio – why do kids join ‘gangs’ – made 3 points as if they were NEW – which surprised me, as i thought they were well recognised 40 + years ago;

    A feeling of self-worth amongst peer group;
    A measure of protection from assault or intimidation, and;
    What they could then ‘get away with’, absent any constraints from family or Society.

    This is from ”Starship Troopers” –[ by Robert Heinlein – 1959] – on the effects of libertarian policies

    //”… the tragic wrongness of what those well-meaning people did, contrasted with what they thought they were doing, goes very deep. They had no scientific theory of morals. They did have a theory of morals and they tried to live by it (I should not. have sneered at their motives), but their theory was wrong – half of it fuzzy-headed wishful thinking, half of it rationalized charlatanry…These juvenile criminals hit a low level. Born with only instinct for survival, the, highest morality they achieved shaky loyalty to a peer group, a street gang. But the do-gooders attempted to ‘appeal to their better natures’ to ‘reach them’ to ‘spark their moral sense.’ Tosh! They had no ‘better natures’; experience taught them that what they were doing was the way to survive… The basis of all morality is duty, a concept with the same relation to group that self-interest has to individual. Nobody preached duty to these kids in a way they could understand … But the society they were in told them endlessly about their ‘rights.’//

  2. Ken,

    I honestly think too many people are over analyising these riots.
    It may just be because they could riot and expected to get away with it.
    I suspect the regular criminals took care to hide their identities whereas, the opportunists, with little criminal experience, failed to do so.
    I am sick to death of seeing interviews on the TV with young yobs, with their faces covered, trying to justify their actions.
    If the BBC and Sky can find these career criminals, why can't the police?
    I noted that even the white yobs that were intervied spoke with a Jamacian accent, I wonder why as it makes no sense, unless of course they hero worship Yardies and their lifestyle/culture.

    Many of the rioters that say they want to work are actually unemployable, I also worry how many yobs that make money robbing or drug running for the gangs, will want to work for the national minimum wage at eighteen years of age, given that is only £4-15 or so an hour.....I can't see someone wanting to work flipping burgers or sitting on a checkout for a few quid an hour, when they can make more engaging in crime; that will be the most difficult thing for any government to overcome in my opinion.
