I am gemused to read that MDMA, the main ingredient in ecstasy, might prove to be an effective treatment for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
The Investigational New Drugs journal has published a study that shows a variation of the drug could be used by doctors to treat cancer if it can be produced in a safe form.

They will have to conceal it in some way, like they did with Niacin and B3 (nicotine)
ReplyDeleteWhat I would say is that E (which I have taken personally but once) should never have been illegal in the first place. Given that virtually all drugs have a risk of an allergic reaction, it's one of the safest ever. Far safer than the statins that GP's dish out like smarties. The biggest risk with E is that you get a dodgy batch (or a deliberatly adulterated batcxh) because of course illegal drugs have no quality control.

ReplyDeleteThalidomide exists in two forms with one isomer therapeutically useful and the other responsible for those dreadful teratogenic side-effects. Back in the 1960s it was impossible to seperate the two isomers but nowadays it is very easy to remove the harmful, so technically thalidomide now presents little or no risk.

While occasional use of MDMA will most likely do little or no harm, long-term use can "burn out" the serotonin receptors in brain cells. MDMA acts in a similar way to serotonin reuptake inhibitors, eg Prozac, but in an uncontrollable manner.

ReplyDelete@Disgusted - Neither BNF nor the Macmillan cancer Charity mention a 'safe variant' of Thalidomide. Both emphasise the need for care in prescribing, and mandate pregnancy prevention practices
The literature suggest that the non-teratrogenic isomer converts within the body, & can therefore 'cause' birth defects.
['Lenalidomide' has some structural similarities, and can be used for similar treatments - but patients are also given strong advice NOT to become pregnant- nor father a child- as is also teratrogenic]

I saw a doc on the BBC years ago about a guy with parkinsons. He couldn't hold a cup of tea without spilling it. Yet when he had an e he could do back flips and suchlike. I would say though he could do that before parkinsons.
