Euro Nanny Bollocks

The latest wheeze from Euro Nanny is a proposal to enforce a mandatory 20mph speed limit in residential zones, and to replace the Highway Code with European law.

All very well, if we had signed up to an EU superstate and had voluntarily given up our right to self governance. However, as I recall, the referendum on the EU in the 1970's was for joining a "Common Market" not a European superstate.

  1. I agree Ken, no matter what Cast Iron Dave says; we only voted on whether we wanted to be part of a trading block not part of a federal EUSSR.
The main parties cloud their manifestos with other items and then use that to say that people aren't bothered whether we remain part of the EUSSR or not.
I know of no one that likes what the EUSSR has become, outside of politicians and the extreme left.

I am sure that Nanny now meddles in every little detail of our lives because she no longer has any say over the major things having given those powers away to the unelected, faceless commies of the EUSSR.

Again, I am English first, British second but, European; NEVER!!

That might actually result in faster journeys in some inner city areas!

But you can't just have MEN doing it - Nanny would complain that was sexist...

There is a systematic effort to lower speed limits which is built on safety agenda of BRAKE (see FakeCharities.org)

The Blair government wanted to lower the National Speed Limit to 50mph, but the backlash was so great, they came up with the wheeze of changing the advice to local authorities so that there is a presumption of reducing speed limits.

There has been a MASSIVE increase in the number of 40mph and 50mph limits in places that were previously National Speed Limit over the last decade, as well as an increase in 20mph zones.

I am not aware of any research that shows that there is any expected or measured safety gain by these ad hox measures, but it doesn't stop the councils implementing them.

I've had a run in with the local council over a stretch of road reduced from 60mph to 50mph in the last year. There has been a higher accident rate since the reduction. But they aren't going to go back.

Watch out for notices in the local paper and in your local library! They have to give notice. But not very much. The first thing anyone local to me knew about the speed reduction was when they were erecting (Can I say erecting?) the new speed limit signs. By then it's too late to protest.

Resist! Councils are the enemy of the people!

    Toy Trumpet;

You make good points; in our local area we have seen limits reduced from 60 to 40mph with out any real warning.

The funny thing is that most of the speed limits came into place at a time when car technology and safety was much lower than it is now; I can remember an old Anglia of mine that needed a weeks notice that I was going to apply the brakes not to mention the old pneumatic windscreen wipers that slowed down on hills etc.
Most of these measures are about power and control and raising money through fines...Kerching....I hate the state, who ever or what ever that is now because, to be honest, I really don't know who the real bosses are now and they don't seem to act on behalf of the people that used to give the state it's power.

    Just laugh at Hi-Viz.

The fact that Brussels seems to have nothing better to do in a time of unprecedented crisis for Europe other that pass silly laws about speed limits is worrying enough; but more worrying, in my opinion, is Britain’s enthusiasm in embracing these, and other daft regulations.

No other European country will take any notice whatsoever. Could it be that Britain will see this as yet another opportunity to raise revenue from fines?
