Nanny's Secret Suitcase Searches

It seems that in her "enthusiasm" to find contraband booze and fags, Nanny is happily indulging in secret searches of our bags and suitcases at airports.

According to a report issued by the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration, John Vine, Nanny's customs staff routinely search travellers and holidaymakers bags without the owners being present.

The report notes that:
"There were no assurances that this power was being used in a lawful, proportionate and controlled manner.

There had been an absence of any assurance being undertaken to ensure that the correct procedures were being followed to protect Human Rights obligations during these searches."
"Ironically" covert searches of luggage are prohibited under the current Border Force Enforcement Handbook guidance.

  1. It's not just secret suitcase searches is it......It came out in court yesterday that the couple that are on trial for starting a fire that killed their children were put straight into a hotel room that the state had bugged.....This must have been before any evidence had come to light regarding the couple's possible involvement in the alledged crime.......Is this standard proceedure for Nanny?

    1. Also the police car, of which local radio stated there was so much background noise half their conversation was unintelligible. Now, they do sound guilty as hell but I only know that because of media reporting.

Jurors tweeting/palmfacing other court procedures have been prosecuted but it seems ok for Nanny to do similar when she chooses.

If this couple are guilty then they'll be going to prison for a very long time. Serves no purpose for Nanny to "big up" the case as it'll just give the defence grounds for a sentencing appeal.Lawyers +10 finances, tax payers -10 just to get a year or two knocked off a life sentence.

  2. Time for an enterprising manufacturer to supply suitcases with built in covert recording devices. (Maybe they already do?) The technology exists, so why not put it to good use? Naturally, if it is found to have been tampered with, or if UKBA ask the owners about it, it will show that "procedures are not being followed"... You can even get SD cards which will update, in real time to a web server, any new images added. This will stop sneaky attempts to erase any "incriminating" evidence.

Ken, UKBA have "form" when it comes to disregarding rules - see this blog: http://nothing-2-declare.blogspot.co.uk/

    There you go!

Reasonable doubt if you ever get caught with a few kilos of drugs in your bags when travelling back from Columbia.

Your bags have been tampered with.

Let’s face it. If the British officers routinely muck about with your luggage, then it is reasonable to assume that their (allegedly) more corrupt counterparts in some of the world’s more dodgier airports would do the same and dupe you into being a drug ‘mule’.

  4. Who knows what the buggers would add to a suitcase.

      Absolutely right!

One of the first questions they ask when pulling you over at customs is whether you packed your own case.

They then go on to ask if anyone has tampered with it.

The reply should now be, ‘Yes……probably’…………………………………………..

"Yes I have packed it myself but I can't guarantee (and have no way of knowing) that it hasn't been tampered with either at the destination airport, the arrival airport or in transit".

Put that before a court and They haven't a hope in hell of winning any case against you. I hope.

A dye pack of the type used in money transit cases would produce an interesting effect..
